Podcasts vs Traditional Radio

Omelete Nights
Episode #45 - 35:56”
This podcast is different from traditional radio for many reasons.
First because it has no commercials.
Second because they don’t have a constant time period/limit.
Third because they are allowed to curse, and they do it a lot. They have a very friendly conversation with each other, it’s not a radio show, it’s a friends conversation.
And fourth because the topics are super random and sometimes nonsense. On this episode they talked about body membranes, band-aids, politics, voice over, the colossal squid, and the movie Ant-Man.
They are a website about entertainment, and mainly “geek” subjects like, comic books, video games, and movies. Even though, on this podcast, the least talked subject was the movie Ant-man. But I still loved the episode, they are always funny and they make every topic enjoyable, even politics, which I hate.
One similarity with traditional radio I think it’s that the podcast is as “professionally” recorded as a radio show would be, the quality is great and they even have a short introduction with music at the beginning.

S04E18 - Terminator Genisys Review - 26:58”
This podcast is different from traditional radio for many of the same reasons as the last one.
There is no commercial.
They curse a lot in it, and they talk the way they want during the program. One interrupts the other, they discuss things in a kind of messy way, and everybody gives their opinion even though some of they are nonsense. It’s like just listening to friends talk about something, it’s a very “personal” type of conversation.
Again, the time of the show is not “conventional” like a radio show.
Another difference from a traditional radio show is that the topic is very specific, something that we would never find in a traditional radio show.
I like this episode because they gave MANY different views and opinions about the movie, conspiracies, and assumptions. They gave a great review because I’m sure that anybody would agree with them in at least one point.

Pop Culture Happy Hour
The Giant Foam Finger: Is Winning Everything? - 10:41”
This podcast also differentiate from traditional radio because the use of curse language.
There are no commercials in this podcast either.
It has a “weird” time period of 10 minutes, which is not common on radio shows.
They talk about a specific topics during the whole time, which is also something not usually done on traditional radio shows.
It also differentiate from traditional radio because of the fact that it is not live.
Different from a traditional radio show, I bet that this podcast was not expensive to be produced, there are only two guys talking about a topic during 10 minutes. The quality is good but nowadays we don’t need a lot of expensive tools to have a good quality recording.

PODCAST.

Fitness & Health:

The title of this podcast was “sitting is killing you (even if you’re a runner)”.  The podcast is somewhat like traditional radio because when I listened to this podcast I was actually at the gym and looked it up and listened so the portability is great.  It was clear like the radio I listen to in my car.  Whats not the same was that this particular podcast didn't have commercials like radio and the guys who made this are having a regular conversation about sitting down is killing people and its so natural and not scripted. What I liked about this podcast is that the two guys were giving advise of what to change up in your daily routine so that you aren’t sitting as much.  For instance, a fun fact that really caught my eye was the average american spends 13 hours sitting, does not include sleep time.  I work out everyday and am on a diet so I didn't know that; I thought it was interesting.

Makeup:

The title of this podcast was “How to cover a zit: Better than a celebrity makeup artist”.  This podcast had a narrator at the beginning introducing this specific makeup artist named Anne Kibler, which reminded me how old traditional radio was where they properly introduced the person who was going to speak.  What wasn’t the same as radio was the fact that makeup gurus or artist aren't really famous in radio so the fact she has her podcast speaking about her makeup tips for people to listen too is awesome, this podcast didn't have any commercials.  What I didn't like was the run time, I wanted there to be more but thats good because it makes you want to subscribe to the podcast and keep listening for updates.

Fashion:

The title of this podcast was “NYFW, Kanye’s fashion show, dealing with Criticism”.  What was similar about this podcast to radio was the conversations between both hosts where you’d here on live radio.  This two (Lisa and Kaarin) Speak about New York’s fashion week and trends they like and what others liked, Kanye’s show being late and peoples reaction to it, What wasn't like tradition radio was the fact that its too opinionated again no commercials, they can say what ever they want and aren't restricted and can be however long they want.

Thrilling Adventure Hour

The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast is a comedic stage show and podcast in the form of old time radio which gives it the convenient appeal of a podcast while keeping many of the qualities found on radio, such as (fake) advertisements. While many podcasts have a cult following, this one in particular has been gaining popularity and growing past its usual live audience by extending itself to the podcast world instead of just starting off there. The Thrilling Adventure Hour attempts to capture its charm as a live show in an hour of audio that can be streamed or downloaded by anyone willing to give it a chance. For this reason alone does podcast have an upper hand against radio broadcasting. Anyone can listen to this broadcast at their convenience as opposed to listening to a live radio show at specific times of the day. This is the same reason why Netflix became so popular; it appealed to everybody's need for instant gratification.

Most radio shows will have celebrity interviews or special guest which is a queue that podcasts have taken giving them some distinct similarities. WTF with Marc Maron contributes to this parallel between the two industries but in a way that many radio or podcast hosts can't deliver. Although it is a bit more difficult to create such a strong and intimate relationship with audiences without the use of live interactivity that radio offers, Maron shows people that it is possible. "Whether digging in the dirt or allowing room to reveal themselves, Maron innately knows how to move a converstion along better than anyone else."

Some names stick out more than others in the world of digital audio files and one of those names is Joe Rogan. Many know him from the show Fear Factor, his comedy stand-up specials, or as a UFC commentator but not many realize he is also a podcaster. Having such a wide audience definitely helps in gaining popularity in other aspects of entertainment which is what made this particular podcast so interesting. Not only do you get to listen to someone outside of what is expected of him, Joe Rogan posts podcasts where he can talk about all sorts of topics; anything he wants really. That's something many wouldn't be able to accomplish on radio because of the limitations. Another thing that caught my attention was the fact that this podcast had video to go along with it. Of course, video isn't necessary but it offers something radio also can't. If you just want to listen to Joe Rogan go on tangents while on the drive to work or watch him while lounging at home, this podcast offers a variation to the usual forms of media.

PODCAST

The Tao of Self Confidence   (ITUNES)
1. The first Podcast I listened to was about how to turn your struggles into your success. It talks about ladies who are trying to find their self confidence they are on a journey. Each of the episodes talks about how someone discovered their "AHA" moment.
I really liked this podcast. This was very interesting to listen to and what made it so much more interesting was how much I can relate to what is being discussed. I also really like how they talk about real stories from real life people it makes it 100 times better to listen to. It makes you realize other people are dealing with the similar situations. It goes on to discuss  "Your struggles are your success." Whatever you go through you will get out of the situation eventually and you have to have confidence in order to succeed and get over things.
This reminded me of the radio station because it is someone who is telling their stories and being interviewed , it is very similar. I really enjoyed listening to this. It was my first time ever listening to a podcast.  This differs from radio because the length is not variable its not a requirement. The podcast was very lengthy. It kind of reminded me of a "minishow."

2. Is Going to College Worth it?
This podcast talks about generation debt. Talks about how many people think of college as a ticket to a solid stable middle class life. The whole idea is how people think just because you get your degree you will be succesful. A lot of people are questing college.
68% percent of people come out of college with no degree but they owe a lot of debt. The cost of college tuition has been growing.
I enjoyed this podcast. There was a lot of information and facts. It is similar to the radio,  because it is someone being interviewed. It is also different beacuse it is very lengthy. As for an interview on the radio it could be a couple of minutes and this podcast goes on for fifty three minutes.

Crime
3. This is a podcast about crime. It is stories about people who have done wrong,  and been wronged or even got caught somewhere in the middle. In this episode Patti is telling her story. Patti was assaulted in her house , whoever assaulted her gave her a black eye and broke her teeth.
The officer locked up Patti saying that she was the one who committed the crime. She gets locked up and what makes it worse is Patti was a transgender woman and when she got locked up she was to be put into the male cell.

This did not remind me of the radio at all. This reminded me of a tv show just with no video. It told a story.

Renno Jeon Assignment #3

http://www.npr.org/podcasts/510200/storycorps

This is a radio program by NPR, called Storycorps recording lives of every day people across the country. This story is about 3 minutes long but, in the podcast, it's about 7 and a half minutes. Though they both are quite similar in terms of formats, I can learn more about the story in detail because of the fact that podcasts are not hindered by time constraints. I get to know, in this story, not only what kind of person the hijacker was and how it all began and the impact on people that the pilot and hijacker left behind.

I like this podcast because I enjoy listening to NPR, especially Storycorps when driving. And once in a while, there comes a story that touches my heart and gets me wondering more about the story like this podcast did that to me. So with this podcast, I got a little bit of understanding of people with mental illness and learned the untold story on the radio.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/david-sedaris-meet-the-author/id674095278?i=162622430&mt=2

It sounds a lot like traditional radio broadcasting because, the formats, in my opinion, are the same aside from the fact that podcasts have more freedom and no time limit. Yet, since podcasts are archived so we can access it at any time. there seems no or a lot less strict regulations on podcasts so this podcast somewhat gives me a feeling that I am there listening to their casual conversation.

I like this podcast too because I like the author David Sedaris because I read one of his books this summer and found him really witty and hilarious and I always knew that he sometimes appears on NPR but I never had a chance to listen to him live but this podcast always waits here for me, not like I have to wait there for him to come on air. Plus they are not chasing time, I like him being able to elaborate on whatever he is answering the questions.

http://www.mydamnchannel.com/wtf/wtf_podcasts/chrisrock_7902

Because this is a podcast, the conversation is quite informal and there is no regulation. there are a lot of curse words coming out let alone the F-word. This segment would never ever go over the air if they were on traditional radio.

Chris Rock is one of my favorite comedians and sometimes he comes on the radio. With the regulations that restrain him from cursing, he is not the Chris Rock on the radio that I know. but in this podcast where he's free to say whatever is in his mind, I can tell that he is being himself and this is the guy that I know.
