Assignment No.1 Dates, Hazing, and Tsunamis?!

A. Greatest 10 First Dates
1. The different types of media used in this article are mostly photos and text. There is also a lot of links that can be clicked on to provide further information about what the article is about. There is also interactivity (sharing on fb, twitter, etc,.) which is an easy way to communicate and share out to others on other platforms of social media. The print also has some areas highlighted to show points of possible focus for the reader. This is effective because you can read over and over again and see what the article is saying in front of you. Along with the title, there is also a subheader which further leads the reader in in this case, by allowing one to be different with the dates, so makes you want to know more. There is also a form to contact the author, as the email provided.
2. The strength of the text is that it provides readers with a ton of information for different creative ideas for dates. Also, as mentioned before, some areas of the text are highlighted or italicized, which brings the reader in and can be clicked on for further information for the reader. The text in this article is very well laid out along with an image. There are also photos provided in this article, which allows us to see the places that are mentioned in this article and give us an idea. Along with most of  the photos is text describing what the image is. As for interactivity, one can easily share the article via different social media platforms.
3. For this article, I would say there is enough media coverage, as there are details about pricing, locations, menus, phone numbers, and websites.

B. Hazing at Baruch College
1. The different types of media used in this article were mostly text along with some photos. There is also a video present with officers describing what happened at the college.
2. The strength of the text is that one has every detail very specifically laid out in front of them. You can go over and re-read something several times if necessary. You can specifically find all the W's answered in text. The strength of the photo in this article is  you can see what happened, as the victim of this hazing death tragedy is portrayed giving us a mental image of the victim, Chun Deng. As for the video, we can hear with audio and pictures what happened and we can hear the tone of voice if there is one, in this case there is, which can stimulate our emotions and help us understand the case better. Along with these forms of multimedia, there is also forms of sharing the article via FB, Twitter, etc,.
3. For this specific article, I don't find the need to add any other form of media because there is already text, photos, and a video present which all convey the same message, but in different forms. as far as media coverage, enough detail was present to learn and inform me about the story.

C. Tsunami Alert in Hawaii
1. The different forms of multimedia used in this article are photos, text, and video. There is also interactivity to leave comments and share.
2. In this article, the text provides us again with physical facts regarding this tsunami alert for Hawaii and California after an 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit Chile causing mass flooding and destruction and 1 reported fatality. This allows us to have a better idea of what went on with FACTS. There are also more facts in bold under the title, stating more facts and attracting the reader to read them because they are so close to the title and are in bold. The photos provide us with a visualization of what happened, we see the destruction of the earthquake. There is also interactivity on this article. The video in this article allows us to see what happened in motion.
3. For this article, I felt all uses of the multimedia were very effective, once again conveying the same message but in different ways which are effective and may give readers different ways to understand it, depending on the reader. Maybe some ways are more effective and easier for certain readers to understand.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/16/politics/republican-presidential-debate-live-updates/index.html

The second Republican Presidential Debate was broadcast live on CNN's website. Not only was the debate broadcasted, but the page was also consistently updated with important quotes from the potential nominees. Also included were links to Twitter and Facebook.

Watching the debate, I was able to see how the potential candidates interacted with eachother in a way that would not have been possible had it been a pure audio recording. The links to Twitter and Facebook would also enable viewers to share the debate on social media, possibly increasing the amount of viewers.

Were I able to, I would add a comment section to the page so that others would be able to share their views on the potential candidate's views.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/16/politics/syria-russia-helicopters-ash-carter-john-kerry/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

As the conflict in Syria between the rebels and the al-Assad regime escalates, it seems as if Russia has been ignoring the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's repeated warnings to cease armament of the al-Assad backed military. Included on the page is a video which shows satellite images of Russian helicopters and tanks at Syrian air bases. Included were links to several social media websites.

The article was extremely informative, even going on to describe a meeting between Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, on Russian military aid to the al-Assad regime.

If I were able to add anything to the article, I would include a general comments section, so that social media users would be able to discuss and debate the issue.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34272765

Due to the wars in Middle Eastern countries such as Syria and Afghanistan, Western Europe is facing its largest refugee crisis since the Second World War. Migrants in Serbia, whose ultimate destination is Germany, have amassed at the Serbia-Hungary border, and a tense standoff with Hungarian Police has developed. Also included with the article is a video which shows victims of tear gas fired by the Hungarian Police over the Serbian border.

Seeing the refugees in the video amassed at the Serbia-Hungary border is quite distressing. A perfect example of the negative impacts of the European Union's Open Border policy. Were I able to add anything to this page, I again would add a comment section.

Story 1

1.)  This article utilizes video, print, and interactivity Medias.
2.) This article is discussing the social standpoint between two of the most notorious terrorist organizations in today's day.  These two include, "Isis" and Al-Qaeda.  Both of these organizations have inflicted damage on our nation, and have the potential to create massive chaos.  The text encrypts a very thorough spectrum of the issue of these two organizations.  It displays the feud between the two, and the negative feelings regarding who is better than the other.  The text can show detail in a different manner than anything else in my eyes, because of how sought out the writers details were.  The video displays a fantastic overview of the text and more!  It has the ability to show readers the actual occurrence that has been, and is going on as I write this.  These two brutal organizations have had a tight history since early 2014.  And will continue to have this feud, which eventually will potentially affect our Nation negatively.  The interactivity is utilized in which there are four links to be accessed; an envelope, which enable to e-mail the entire article, a Facebook icon, which will allow to be posted on one's wall.  There's also a Twitter icon to tweet the article, and also this article will let the public post the article to Pinterest.
3.) If there was something I can change, it would have to be how the reporter/writer approaches these organizations.  In which I would address them in a very negative manner, not really approaching them with ease.  Some of the public doesn't realize what dangers these groups create, and everyone should know no matter the case, both sides are savages.

Story 2

1.) This article utilizes print, video and interactivity Medias
2.) This article utilizes text in way that invigorates the reader of the horrible occurrence that had happened in 2013 at Baruch College.  It presents the harsh dangers of hazing that occurs in universities across the nation.  The brothers that had made the initiation, included for him to run across a frozen yard wearing only a blindfold and a back pack.  While running through the yard other members of the fraternity would 'spear' Deng into the ground.  The text has shown the brutal occurrence in a well-developed manner.  The details were very in depth and give the reader a clear understanding of the death of the young student.  Another media that was used was video, the video presents a police officer discussing the harsh reality of Michael Deng, and how and where this instance took place.  He further goes on briefly speaking about the police investigation. The other media was interactivity, which has a few links that are followed to Twitter, Facebook, and an option to e-mail the article.
3.) The New York Times had done a great job addressing this horrendous occurrence, but if there was one thing to be changed it would be a video of the other members in the fraternity being interviewed.  These members had killed this young man, with no help to be offered when he cried for it.  They deserve to be publicly embarrassed.

Story 3

1.)  This article utilizes the print and interactivity medias.

2.) The text allows the reader to be immersed because of the great detail.  Each thought is sought out and is clearly drawn.  It is showing the harsh realities of the pollution rate.  The rate of pollution in our atmosphere is at an all-time and climbing.  There have been 3.3 annual deaths worldwide because of extense pollution.  Reporters say by 2050 there will be 6 million annual deaths across the world.  By showing the staggering numbers it makes the reader coherent of the world today.  Print makes the details very frightening in which it becomes effective and powerful.  The reason had been stated because of agriculture and farming, and the leading cause of death is strokes and heart disease.  The text gives a great overview of the dangerous affects the pollution creates. The second media is interactivity, which allows readers to e-mail, share on Facebook, and post on twitter.  This can become effective because of the dangers of the polluted air can be put across social media.  Maybe someone will stumble across the article and take a stand on this aroused subject matter.

Examiner reveals cause of Moses Malone's sudden death

This is a powerfully presented story about Moses Malone’s dead.  At the top of the page is a bold headline.
There is a picture of Moses Malone taken in 2006.  The text shows him waiving to the crowd during a playoff game.   There is a video of his playing career.   There is a section to see highlights from his career.

On another page people are leaving comments that express how shocked and saddened they are by this awful news of his death.  This goes in depth about the passing    and gives details on the events.

A strength of the story is the clip in the middle of the article.    This shows highlights of his career and award he received throughout. Detail of the events leading   up to Malone’s passing is in text. This text is crucial because it gives the location and the of Malone’s passing.  Another strength of the story is talking about Malone’s friends and the memories of what they had planed to do during that day, a charity golf outing.  This is very powerful to me. The text is clear and exact on   the situation that is being covered.

The main interactivity in this story are messages that are being left at the bottom of the page it shows readers offering their condolences.  When seeing the messages the emotion can get to readers.  This interactive section is very effective.

I would want to add more video and maybe more messages.  I would add more photos Malone.  Something else that would be good to see might be an interview to get more reactions.

Stories like these can be very emotional.

Throwback CC start has Yanks encouraged
Left-hander posts scoreless outing for first time since 2013

A primary media used in this article is MLB Advanced Media.  There are action pictures of players.  One of the game announcers is providing the action. Other sources of media used in the story are the camera that has a clear view from center field to home plate.  There is an article (text) about the    game and interviews with player reactions.

At the   bottom of the screen it has comments from the people who watched the game.  The text is effective because it gets so much information out of the story.

I would add more video to help the reader get a better understanding.  I would also add more in depth video to see the length of what goes on during breaks.  I feel the comments are not enough.

Ariana Grande Nails Musical Impressions Of Christina Aguilera & More — Watch

This is a very entertaining article on Grande coming on Jimmy Fallon.  The story shows a video of Grande’s musical impressions.  The text goes into detail and length plus links to other articles.   The different media also includes photos of actors and actresses.

The strength of the article is the clip of Grande singing into a microphone.  It shows Grande singing Mary Had A Little Lamb in the voice of another singer.

This text is effective because it is humorous.

Some readers leave comments   down   at the bottom of the page.

The media coverage that   I would change   is that I would add some screen shots from the show to get further into     the story.

Events Taking Place in the U.S. (except for one)

This news article uses the three most common forms of media on an internet news source: video, text, and interactivity. There's a reason why these three forms of media are used so often in a news story; they are independently immersive but together make a powerful source of information. The video is blunt and gets straight to the point of what the article is about while the text gives the reader more information and context to what the video entails. And finally, the article surrounds the reader with related stories that creates the perfect environment for the he or she to be consumed by the events taking place and brought up to date with popular culture. One thing I would have been interested in seeing is a comments section to see what opinions people had other than just being spoon fed a story.

What I found interesting about this story is that it uses audio without video. This isn't as common in visual news articles mainly because it isn't as personal or immersive and most of all it's somewhat uninteresting. Now this article does use text and there is other related content that you can choose to read at the bottom of the article, that is, if you so happen to bother reading it. The problem with this specific article is that the text is almost word-for-word of what the audio informs the reader on. Although the information is being given there is no reason for the reader to continue any further research on the news source which, in turn, will cause the reader to most likely not return to the site for the little it has to offer.

Unlike the first story, we can see a photo gallery that presents an emotional connection to the Syrian asylum seekers stuck at the border between Serbia and Hungary. Because the photo gallery is the first thing shown it forces the reader to want to read the rest of the article in order to completely understand what is currently taking place during a time of desperation for the Syrian nationals. What further strengthens the article is the fact that after reading just a few small paragraphs there is a video that continues its pursuit on informing the reader. It is placed perfectly within the article so that the reader never gets a chance to become bored of he story. Something is always happening within the article and one may choose to read more on the related stories section or even reply down in the comment section below.

The Threats of Hazing, ISIS and Doanld Trump Assignment 1

Sean Browne

1. The different types of media components in this article was  video, text and interactivity
2. The text provided a solid outline of what this story entailed, thirty seven brothers from the Pi Delta Psi Fraternity would be facing criminal charges for their part in the death Chun Hsien Deng's on December 9th, 2013. His death was a cause of hazing. The story arced the time of Chun's death to police arresting these thirty seven fraternity brothers. In between those two events, the story displayed all of the things that happened in between. Things like the police officers trying to build a case and the questioning of the fraternities president Andy Meng for his role in this event. The text did a very good job in giving detailed occurrence of what happened.
The video displayed a in depth analysis of Chun's death. Police chief  Chris Wagner of the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department gave the details of the death. Deng was blindfolded and was assaulted by his other brothers. Deng complained how much it hurt, and then he was unconscious and had a hard time breathing. which lead to his death. The video gave  me a visual aid of what happened, the emotional power of this video really made me uncomfortable and gave me a image of what happened. So it was definitely very powerful.
The interactivity came when at the top of the article, I could click on a twitter button, and I could share this story on twitter. I think that it is very cool because I can spread the awareness of what happened
3. If I were to add something to this video I would definitely have added a poll. With a question saying " after this event, should Greek life be involved on campus". I would like that because I think  that's a reasonable question to bring up. This is not the first time a fraternity related death has happened, so I would be interested to see what people think about fraternities.
Story Two -    http://nydn.us/1J9Tp8U
1. The types of media in this article was print, video and interactivity
2. The print of this news story told how ISIS is planning an 9/11 repeat. The print depicted threats from ISIS. with quotes from ISIS such as “We will repeat September 11 and we will send cars full of explosives and suicide bombers,”. So I definitely felt the severity of this issue. Thanks to the Daily News, I understand that ISIS is officially planning a threat on the United States.
I found the video the be very gut wrenching. The video showed footage of a plane flying into the World Trade Center and images of ISIS soldiers. I found this video to be very impactful. Watching that footage made me very upset and brought back very sad memories of an awful disaster. But the video did fulfill its purpose, because the whole point of this article was to spread awareness of a awful treat such as ISIS, and sometimes the only way to spread awareness is through scaring us.
The interactive part came when the writer Meg Wagner shared her email at the bottom of the article. I thought that was cool. Now if I wanted to share my opinions of this article I have direct access to do so.
3. I would had definitely added a response from the United States in her print. Just because it could give people a sense of comfort. I think some people reading this could be very frightened, so maybe a response from the government reassuring its people could have been fitting
 1. The types of media in this article was print, video and interactivity
2. The print was an informative piece, it told how the Republican debate was on tomorrow night. It was pretty basic information like what time it is on, what channel it is on and who is in it. The one surprise was that Carly Fiorina will also be joining the debate as the eleventh candidate,
The video showed how Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina were gaining ground in this election. They also said that if these two one a primary or a caucus that it would be a first time a African American or a Woman who was affiliated with the Republicans won. I thought that fact was interesting only because I never knew that before.
David Catanese also posted his email information in case I wanted to give him some feedback. Unfortunately I would probably not give him any stellar reviews on this piece.
3. If I were to change anything I would have definitely cut out all the Donald Trump nonsense at the end on the print. Catanese talks about how Trump and Carson have been attacking each other. I just want one article in relation to the election where I don't have to hear who Donald Trump is attacking now

“NASA will Isolate 6 Researchers in a dome for a year to Simulate a Mars Mission”

1.) Video, text, interaction and pictures were the media components used in this interesting article.
This article is about how six researches are going to live in a dome for one year to simulate a mars mission.

The video is about ten minutes long and well used, has details about it. Show how the dome is made inside and everything that the researchers have to live in for the year, there are not many comments but there are plenty of shares in different social media sites. There are also pictures of each location of the dome and a map of it.

I personally like to read the comments to see how people feel about it so I will just like to add or see more comments for a discussion.

Story#2

“Just 5 Minutes of Running Per Day Could Add Years to Your Life”

1). Interactivity, video and text were the media components used in this TIME video. This health informative video is great; it is short, less than two minutes, creative and interesting. I personally like to read about health everyday and I like it because it is informative and short, goes right to the point.

This video is about the benefits of jogging but the best part is that researches from the World Health Organization said that it is better to run for less than an hour than more than one hour. Awesome right? There is a video with text on it, colors and voice; there is not much text aside. The page is friendly has interactivity and easy to move around, can be share on Facebook, twitter, and pinterest or e-mail it. There are related interesting health articles with around. I highly recommend going in this site if you like wellness and health lifestyle articles.

I will like to see an interview with someone who run and someone who doesn’t for an example and comparison. And it is missing comments. I like to read the comments to see how people feel and think about it.

Story #3

"Why Failure is so Important to Career Success”

1). This CNN money women entrepreneur article has a short video without voice, but has text, pictures, related articles and interactivity, the video catch your attention right away.

It is effective because there is not much text on it but enough to understand the facts about entrepreneur woman and the fair to failure, it has options to share in most social media sites and comments I recommend reading the comments for a better understanding and knowledge of the article also you can share your opinion too and that makes articles good for a discussion.

This article has it all; I will just add voice to the video.
